We are planning a great summer of events, and gatherings focused on learning more about what it means to be a community of faith in the context of the neighborhoods we inhabit. Find more information about each event below.
June
Our Savior Community Garden – June 8, 9:00 am | Our Savior Episcopal Church & Community Garden
How does a small church in the middle of a food desert with more than three acres of land respond to the needs of the neighborhood? That question was answered by the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Pleasant Grove in 2003 by planting a garden. That first year they were able to donate more than 1,000 lbs of vegetables to the Southeast Dallas Emergency Food Center. Since then, many tons of fresh produce has been grown, donated, and shared to feed the hungry. Come to see the garden, get to know the people who make it possible, and get your hands dirty as we work with neighbors looking to solve hunger and serve others.

Little Egypt Presentation with Tim Sullivan – June 3, 9:00 am | Parish Hall
On one single day in 1962 200 people moved from the community known as Little Egypt, near the corner of Northwest Highway and Ferndale. Little Egypt was settled in the mid 1800’s by former slaves, who built a community together. Though it was fully inside the City of Dallas, Little Egypt received few of the basic city services that would normally be expected by a community. Services like running water, street and sidewalk infrastructure, all available blocks away. Shortly after the move, the houses and building that made up the 35 acre community were bulldozed.
Come to hear more about this almost forgotten part of our neighborhood from Tim Sullivan, who worked with a team to uncover more of the people and story of Little Egypt.
